THE LIGHTHOUSE OF SAN MAURIZIO

The lighthouse of San Maurizio, erected in 1927,was planned by the engineer Gabriele Giussani to commemorate the centenary of the death of Alessandro Volta. The octagonal base which holds up the lantern, is 29 metres high. It contains a spiral staircase made up of 143 steps which still permits to reach the upper part from which it is possible to have an invaluable view. The lighthouse of Volta, sheer above the lake, can be reached from San Maurizio square and it is still today an important itinarary chosen by those tourists and people of Como who want to go up the spiral staircase to see from the top the first lake basin, the shore of Piazza Cavour and the marvellous view of the Alps.
A curious , historical piece of news reveals that the lighthouse of Volta fallowed an experimental one which was constructed in 1899 during the first exhibition on Volta.
